Läsarkommentar om altruism

En läsare kommenterar mitt inlägg om altruism:

Jag läser din blogg emellanåt och tycker att du ibland har viktiga poänger – som när du attackerar svenska mästaren i halmgubbe och socialismen i Venezuela – men ibland är jag mer kritisk till din överdrivna liberalism. I fallet med altruism vs. egoism är jag kritisk eftersom du lägger upp en straffspark åt lögnvalstanten och faktiskt själv angriper halmgubbar. Jag ska ta upp ett par saker som borde vara uppenbara eftersom jag inte är särskilt intresserad av någon diskussion med någon som har en ideologi som vägledning i livet:

Du överdriver den altruism du kritiserar som om den införd skulle gälla alla handlingar som någonsin utförs av varje enskild människa, medan vi som uppskattar altruism snarare ser det som något som ska komplettera den egoism eller gynnande av oss själva som vi (som däggdjur med själviska gener) är födda med och inte kan komma ifrån.

Om man, som du gör med altruismen, skulle dra din egoism in samma absurdum så skulle en egoism "systemized, universalized, and institutionalized" leda till att om jag såg någon drunkna, bli våldtagen eller – som häromveckan – drabbas av en infarkt på promenad utan eget sällskap, så skulle jag inte vara beredd att resp. bli blöt, riskera misshandlad eller ens offra femton minuter på den döende person som (kanske) bara jag kan rädda till livet genom att stötta honom och ringa en ambulans.

Kort sagt så angriper du en halmgubbe.

I punkt två i "manifestet" står: "The ethics of altruism regards the life of the individual as something one must be ready to sacrifice for the good of others."

Förutom att det här låter som en parafras på det som brukar höras från tokfeminister om prostitution, att kvinnan måste "vara redo att offra sig för mannens rätt att ha sex", så är det alltså INTE altruistiskt att tvingas av andra eller sig själv att offra livet. Det är heller inte altruistiskt att TVINGA sin "hjälp" på någon annan, som du insinuerar, utan det är att hjälpa sina medmännsikor med ödmjukhet inför deras önskan och påtvingande bara när det är uppenbart att de behöver hjälp – kanske genom att ropa att de drunknar.

Vad är egentligen problemet för en libertarian om jag visar min altruism genom att offra femton minuter av mitt liv och 3 kronor på ett nödsamtal för att rädda en annans liv NÄR JAG VÄLJER DET SJÄLV? precis som horan alltså. Det är något som gör mig altruistisk kanske 1 promille av mitt liv och något jag offrar helt av fri vilja utan att tjäna något på det.

Jag gör det inte för att jag känner mig "redo att offra mitt liv" eller för att jag vill ha samma tjänst tillbaka eller en slant för besväret (jag har inte sett honom tidigare, vet inte vad han heter och kommer att känna igen honom lika lite som han mig). Jag gör det för att det är den moral – utan "systemized, universalized, and institutionalized" egoism – som jag vill ska gälla i mitt samhälle för att det i många avseenden är det lämpligaste.

Vill du därför vara så vänlig att inte lägga upp straffsparkar åt den irriterande lögnvalstanten som gör att hon kan utmåla liberalism som en ideologi som rekommenderar folk att låta sin nästa drunkna eller bli våldtagen för att det skulle vara fel att offra sig själv av fri vilja för att hjälpa andra. Låt inte socialismen få monopol på att bry sig om sin nästa genom att föra resonemang utifrån halmgubbar eller som inte håller för en närmare granskning.

Tack för mycket tänkvärd kritik. Jag vill här tydliggöra att frågan om egoism kontra altruism inte handlar om socialism kontra liberalism. Politik har lite med detta att göra. Det handlar om moral. Vidare vill jag nog påstå att du trampar lite fel när du skriver att du "inte är särskilt intresserad av någon diskussion med någon som har en ideologi som vägledning i livet". Ideologi i det här sammanhanget handlar ju enbart om moraliska värderingar. Du får svårt att hitta någon att diskutera med som inte har en moralisk ideologi som vägledning i livet.

Du har fel när du påstår att altruism inte handlar om att offra livet för andra. Det är precis det det handlar om. Altruism som normativ etisk teori säger att andras behov och intressen alltid är viktigare än dina egna. Den etiska egoismen säger det motsatta, vilket är fullt förenligt med att faktiskt vilja göra gott för andra. I de allra flesta fall skulle det således kännas ganska naturligt att hjälpa en medmänniska i nöd, men det är moraliskt rätt bara när det inte innebär att ens egna intressen kränks.

Altruism Defined and Dismissed

A Swedish blogger makes the claim that altruism defines as "love of humankind". This is not correct. From the Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary:

[The] willingness to do things which benefit other people, even if it results in disadvantage for yourself.

From the A Dictionary of Common Philosophical Terms (New York: McGraw-Hill, 2000):

A disinterested benevolence and unselfish concern for the welfare of others, with no other end in mind.

Superficially, the idea of unselfishness may seem plausible and desirable; but systemized, universalized, and institutionalized, altruism would result in a society where no one would care for their own wellbeing. However, interpersonal relations flourish on the common notion of every subject's self-interest. If objects were to be held in a higher regard than subjects, there would be no room for equality among humans. The people able to gain the most unselfish treatment from others would be better off than people lacking this ability would. In other words: egoism can be applied objectively, altruism cannot. I respect people who say that the want something done because it suits them; but I have no respect for people who say the want something done for my sake. Altruism is only arrogant.

I am an advocate of ethical egoism. I could here write some clever elucidation on the subject, but I prefer to quote the much brighter philosopher James Rachels:

1. A person has only one life to live. If we value the individual—that is, if the individual has moral worth—then we must agree that this life is of supreme importanance. After all, it is all one has, and all one is.
2. The ethics of altruism regards the life of the individual as something one must be ready to sacrifice for the good of others. Therefore, the ethics of altruism does not take seriously the value of the human individual.
3. Ethical Egoism, which allows each person to view his or her own life as being of ultimate value, does take the human individual seriously—it is, in fact, the only philosophy that does so.
4. Thus, Ethical Egoism is the philosophy that we ought to accept.

Royalism in the United States

Michael Barone writes affectionately about royalism in contemporary American politics. From a leading article in the Wall Street Journal:

I've decided that something can be said for the increasing royalism of our politics. And whether you like it or not, you can't deny it's there. Not when the wife of the 42nd president is a leading candidate to succeed the 43rd president who in turn is the son of the 41st president. The two George Bushes are referred to in their family, we are told, as 41 and 43. If Hillary Clinton wins, will she and her husband call each other 42 and 44?

Våldsvänstern dissar Mona Sahlin

Den syndikalistiska tidningen Arbetaren dissar Mona Sahlin i ledarartikel och passar på att dra den vanliga visan om att alla problem i världen kan reduceras till att några tjänar mer pengar än andra. Det är alltså Karl Marx' för länge sedan motbevisade teori och den eviga konflikten mellan arbete och kapital som talar emot valet av Sahlin som socialdemokratisk ledare. Nåväl. Jag tror Sahlin klarar sig bra utan våldsvänsterns stöd (minns Osynliga partiets stenar och mordhot). Ledarartikeln är ointressant, så istället lyfter jag fram en kommentar som än så långe finns att läsa på tidningens hemsida:

Riktiga arbetare som kan lukta svett och inte bryr sig om de blir lite smutsiga när de jobbar, har jag viss respekt för. Men inga har gjort mer illa på denna jord, än de teoretiska så kallade intellektuella kommunisterna. Hela Afrikas eländiga tillstånd kan gottskrivas dessa as till människor.

Stockholm och Malmö borde samarbeta

På sin blogg skriver Björn Pedersen om Ansvarsutredningens förslag att dela in Sverige i sex regioner. Han är rädd för att Stockholm kommer att missgynnas:

Vi lär inte få ett regionparlament, och vi lär inte få bestämma våra regionala frågor. Så fort det krockar med riksdagens agenda så får vi nog också i fortsättningen nöja oss med att bli överkörda i den regionala utjämningens namn.

Det är sant att Stockholm drabbas negativt av sin egen makt. Riksdagen består till största delen av personer som inte är stockholmare (något annat vore konstigt) medan departementens tjänstemän, majoriteten av statsråden och nästan alla fria utredare är bosatta i Mälardalen. Vi som bor i en bra bit från Stockholm drabbas något oerhört av detta. Tjänstemännen i Stockholm är ökänt arroganta och ointresserade av allt som har med "landsbygden" att göra (vilket de envisas med att kalla Malmö trots att vår stad ingår i en storstadsregien mer tätbefolkad än stockholmsregionen). Vi som bor och är politiskt verksamma i Malmö drabbas nog extra hårt eftersom vi inte har någon möjlighet att påverka vår situation på det sätt som krävs. Var femte potentiell skattekrona försvinner till Danmark eftersom många tusen invånare betalar skatt där men bor i Malmö. Barn ska ha dagis, skola och lekplatser, men deras föräldrar betalar ingeting i skatt. Den förra (s)-regeringen med den alldeles osedvanligt korkade finansministern Ringholm i spetsen gjorde en "deal" med danskarna som innebär att danska staten kompenserar den svenska staten för de som arbetar i Danmark men bor i Sverige. Där stannar de. Malmö som har utgifterna får inte ett öre av dessa pengar. Istället har socialdemokraterna utformat ett system (främst för Norrlands skull ska medges) som innebär att kommuner med skatteunderskott kompenseras av kommuner med skatteöverskott. Ringholm gjorde helt enkelt så att malmöiterna fick pengar av stockholmarna i ett utjämningssystem.

Så här sitter vi nu. Stockholmarna förlorar pengar till Malmö för att Malmö förlorar pengar till Danmark. Svenska staten tar Malmös pengar och låter Stockholm betala notan. Bieffekten blir att Stockholms politiker tycker att Malmö själ deras skattepengar medan Malmös politiker är förbannad på tjänstemännen i Stockholm för att de inte ids bry sig om någonting utanför Mälardalen.

Jag hoppas på den nya regeringen och i synnerhet Centerpartiet. När Maud Olofsson besökte Malmö i valrörelsen blev hon lite häpen över utvecklingen. Hennes bild var nog den som förmedlas av oinformerade stockholmare – att Malmö är en storväxt landsortshåla som inte klarar sig själv. Men jag tror hon insåg problemet när det stod klart för henne att den stora danska inflyttningen i kombination med allt fler svenskar som jobbar i Köpenhamn inom bara något år kan göra att mer än var tionde förvärvsarbetande inte betalar kommunalskatt.

Sverige har en ny regering som sagt sig vara mån om att både Mälardalsregionen och Örseundsregionen ska växa. Stockholmare och malmöiter har mycket att vinna på att samarbeta för att komma tillrätta med det system som drabbar våra städer och regioner.

The World's Oldest Mother

It's kind of hard to believe that somebody can do a thing like this, but apparently a 67-year-old woman in Spain has become a mother of twins after she acted under false pretence to get in-vitro fertilization treatment in the United States. According to an article in News of the World she says, "Everyone has to have children at the right time for them. This was the right time for me. It was something I always dreamed of." Well, be that as it may, but what about the children? Realistically speaking, the new mother may have about ten years left of her life, which will make her sons orphans before they are teenagers. And since she is a spinster, she is now hunting for a younger husband to be a father to the babies.

Some people are unforgivably short-sighted.

Förmögen vänster saknar intellektuella?

Den socialdemokratiske bloggaren Roger Jönsson frågar sig varför vänsterblockets tankesmedjor är så passiva. Frågan är berättigad. Det vore kul om vänstern åtminstone försökte formulera egna politiska förslag byggda på intellektuellt resonemang istället för att enbart odla myter om borgerligheten och Timbro. Så Jönsson gör rätt som ställer frågan. Lite mindre rätt blir det i kommentarerna när någon skriver: "Problemet för SAP är att vi inte har några pengar eller sponsorer som pumpar in tiotals miljoner till en tankesmedja, vilket Timbro har."

Snäll som jag är så påminner jag nu de socialdemokratiska gräsrötterna om att deras parti fick inte mindre än 519 miljoner av LO i valrörelsen 2002. (Hur mycket det var 2006 kan vi bara gissa i dagsläget.) 519 000 000 kronor! Det motsvarar 57 kronor per invånare i Sverige, och var sex gånger mer i propagandapengar än George Bush hade att spendera på varje väljare i presidentvalet 2004. Med andra ord är det inte pengar som vänstern saknar, men möjligen intellektuella.

Brits Say Yes to Gay Adoption

A new BBC poll suggests that gay couples in Britain should be allowed to adopt children. From the press release:

Almost two thirds of people believe gay couples should be allowed to adopt children, according to a poll commissioned by Newsnight.

The ICM poll to be broadcast on Newsnight, tonight at 10.30pm on BBC Two, found that 64% of those polled believed gay couples should be allowed to adopt, as opposed to 32% who said they should not. Of those that thought they should, 70% were female compared to 57% who were male.

Asked if gay male couples should be able to adopt children, 55% of those polled answered that they should while 42% responded against. Of the 55%, the percentage of females who answered that they should was higher—60% compared to 49% of males.

Those polled were also asked the same question relating specifically to gay female couples.

Fifty nine per cent answered that they should be able to adopt children and 38% thought they should not. Of those who answered in the positive 63% were female and 55% male.

The singer/preacher's website gives it away. I mean, seriously, no one who knows anything about gay culture can put Cyndi Lauper on a list of "safe" non-gay bands.

Vilse i pannkakan

Stefan Sanneskär har skickat en kommentar till ett tidigare blogginlägg:

Äntligen fick jag klart för mig vad du bygger dina elitistiska tankegångar på när du på ett klart militant vis slåss för hbt-frågorna och kallar alla som inte håller med dig för homofober.

Du skriver i inlägget bl.a: "I'm convinced that homosexuality is caused by nature (or God, if you prefer) and that scientists eventually will find its root."

Först vill jag då fråga; om du är så säker på detta, varför inte berätta om det är Gud eller naturen som orsakar homosexualitet? Du har ju inte visat tecken på att erkänna dig till någon religion tidigare så varför lämna det avgörandet till läsaren?

Om du är så bestämd i det första ledet så bör du rimligtvis kunna vara det i nästa.

Nåväl, till själva budskapet då. Du menar alltså att du är övertygad om att man föds till att vara homosexuell? För att överhuvudtaget kunna diskutera det så måste vi först slå fast att man i så fall kan födas med olika former av "böjelser."

Det kan ju knappast vara så att naturen eller gud ("if you prefer") endast har öppnat upp för två möjligheter. Nej, nu hamnar du återigen på det sluttande planet som leder till alla möjliga böjelser varav en hel del är olagliga. Bl a får vi alltså finna oss i att somliga föds till att vara mördare, våldtäktsmän mm.

Kör hårt nu, Aqurette, sätt igång och kalla mig för homofob, böghatare och allt vad du brukar ta till som försvar. Problemet är att det inte blir mer sant för att du upprepar dina fåniga svartmålningar.

Uppriktigt sagt, tycker jag mycket synd om dig. Inte för att du är homosexuell och inte för att du är moderat utan helt enkelt för att du är så vilsen i pannkakan.

Allt fler naturvetenskapliga studier talar om att mänsklig sexualitet huvudsakligen avgörs av biologiska skeenden i hjärnan under fosterstadiet. Några absoluta bevis för denna teori finns inte, men jag finner den trolig eftersom det bevisligen är så att människor inte väljer sin sexuella läggning. Vore det så att människan valde sexuell läggning så förefaller det obegripligt hur så många envisas med att vara homosexuella i sociala miljöer som föraktar homosexualitet. Vad om inte biologi kan förklara att så många fortsätter förälska sig i personer av samma kön även när staten dömer dessa till fängelse, medicinska försök, tortyr, slutenvård inom psykiatrin, straffarbete och inte sällan regelrätta utrotningsförsök? Egenintresset borde tala emot ett sådant val av sexualitet eftersom det inte medför någon ekonomisk vinning eller högre status.

Det stämmer att mycket talar för att biologin spelar en stor roll även när vi har att göra med personer som rutinmässigt mördar och våldtar. Den brittiska tidskriften The Economist publicerade den 23 december 2006 flera artiklar om modern hjärnforskning. I en av artiklarna berättades om hur en helt vanlig amerikansk man plötsligt började samla barnpornografi och söka sexuella kontakter med underåriga. Ingen, minst av alla han själv, förstod vad som föranlett detta förrän man i röntgen såg att han fått en hjärntumör. När tumören avlägsnats försvann mannens pedofila intressen.

Jag är övertygad om att våra hjärnor påverkar våra preferenser mer än vi vill tro. Det gäller alla, även de som i en viss kontext anses normala. Hjärnans biologi är en produkt av naturen. Man kan därför inte med säkerhet säga att en mördare valt att mörda. Argumentet för att straffa en sådan "naturlig mördare" måste därför formuleras annorlunda, exempelvis genom att ta fasta på de faktiska skadeverkningarna för andra – självförsvarsprincipen.

När det gäller homosexualitet finns inga sådana praktiska argument att tillgå. Anledningen till att så många föraktar homosexuella är kulturellt och religiöst betingad. Tvärtom är det homofobin som orsakar objektiv skada.

Slutligen, vad gäller Gud, så vilar jag mig mot en mycket traditionell gudsuppfattning i mitt tidigare inlägg. Att söka sanningen om den skapande guden är något som såväl moderna kreationister som äldre katolska teologer (studera exempelvis Thomas Aquinas fem gudsbevis i Summa Theologiæ) ägnat sig åt. I den meningen är jag mycket traditionell även om jag personligen normalt förfäktar ett, som det heter, pragmatiskt gudsbevis.

Hysteri kring narkotika

Radioactive Man

While Europe and much of America is busy bashing President Bush after his State of the Union address, the Middle East's premier fascist is making new threats against Israel and the United States. We have heard it all before. But knowing that, I cannot understand why so many continue to ridicule the War on Terror. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is real, not some fictional character made up by the Bush administration.

God Hates Fags

Well, that's what some Christians want us to believe. Now they even praise the hate by singing about it aloud to some catchy tune in a video. (Don't watch the video clip if you're gay and take offence easily.)

Today seems to be a good day for tacky religious homophobia. Earlier I learned that someone has made a complaint about the Finnish priest Karl af Hällström to the local chapter of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland. Apparently, his message that God loves everybody regardless of sexual orientation was too much for some.

However, there is some good news today. Swedish state television reported earlier this evening that a government commissioner suggests an alteration in the Marriage Act. If parliament confirms the proposed alteration, same-sex couples will be able to get married on 1 January 2008.

Pro-Choice and Gay Extinction

A reader object to my entry on "Gay Extinction":

Enjoyed your blog until…

I'm convinced that homosexuality is caused by nature (or God, if you prefer) and that scientists eventually will find its root. This, of course, will probably give parents-to-be the opportunity to terminate any pregnancy that could result in a gay child. It's a disturbing thought for many, but to me it's a good thing. If societies are homophobic—and most are—it may not be a bad thing not to be born into that. Sullivan exemplifies with the current situation where female and handicapped foetuses are routinely aborted in favour of "normal" male foetuses. Nature (or God) has nothing to do with it; it's all down to human cultural and political beliefs. And these are the beliefs we organize our lives by. They are what make us human. I therefore see nothing wrong with aborting foetuses for whatever reason. The important thing is not to preserve a certain gay population but to enable those living a good life.

So, if a society is against certain things, it's always desirable to adapt and conform?
What kind of liberal values do you wish to promote by that statement?
With that line of thought, we would still be living in the Dark Ages.
We would have adopted policies to suppress the move from manual labour to industrialisation, as well as the transition from slave labour to a voluntary (and paid) workforce.
Are we just to resign all our rights and thus accept the current government's or regime's values as God Given?

Don't get me wrong, on an emotional level I am disturbed by the thought that people might want to end a pregnancy based only on the presumption that the child may turn out to be a homosexual as an adult. The most desirable vision of the future would be one where societies are tolerant and no parents-to-be would ever wish to do that. Just to be clear, I'm not suggesting that people should adapt and conform to society. In fact, I think people should always stay critical to cultural ideas. But that being said, I think it would be a foolishly utopian of me or anyone else to ignore that fact that people are adapting to the norms of the times and societies they live in. We all are. That's part of being human.

I'm being asked what kind of liberal values I wish to promote by defending the right of future parents-to-be to abort foetuses with a natural ability for homosexuality. Well, that's just it. I wish to promote the right for individuals to choose and restrict governmental interference. As liberals, we should focus our energy on changing cultural and religious ideas surrounding homosexuality instead of asking the lawmakers to prohibit people to do what they believe is right. If or when scientists develop a method of determining a foetus's sexual orientation, we must be prepared for the likely outcome that many will use this new possibility.

Politisk korrekthet i klimatfrågan

Angående det en av dina läsare skrev om växthuseffekten:
Det finns även nyare artiklar som åtminstone ifrågasätter växthuseffektens omfattning och påstådda effekter. En bra sammanfattning, med omfattande källförteckning i vetenskapslitteraturen, presenteras av Katoinstitutet. Så visst finns det kontroverser även ibland vetenskapsmän, men det hör man naturligtvis inte när aftonbladet och expressen försöker sälja lösnummer på panikvarningar.

Vi kan faktiskt inte, som denne läsare gör, utgå ifrån att den politiskt korrekta versionen vi hör i media är någon vetenskaplig konsensus. Läsaren hänvisar tex till DDT, och om man lyssnar till TV och radio så var detta växtgiftet från helvetet som tack och lov är förbjudet idag. Även det är en version av verkligheten som är minst sagt vinklad. Om man tex läser Lena Hulténs beskrivning as människans krig mot insekter och spindeldjur (Den sexbente fienden) så framkommer en annan verklighet:. Nämligen att epidemier likt malaria växer igen i Tredje världen och är endemiska i många regioner. Det var de inte innan DDT förbjöds och användes. Men efter påtryckningar från väst så följde u-länderna efter och förbjöd DDT, fast alternativen var för dyra. Dessutom så skulle DDT kunna användas extremt mycket sparsammare idag, varvid hälso och miljö-effekter skulle kunna minimeras.

Detta är ännu ett exempel på hur en politisk korrekt enviromentalism bland journalister lägger sig som en våt filt över en synnerligen viktig debatt och diskussion. Det betyder inte för att allt vad miljövänner säger skulle vara fel, men däremot bör de få försvara och debattera sina åsikter och övertygelser som alla andra. Den "hype" som växthsueffekten har idag, där all form av kritik mot överdrivna apokalyps-varningar och dyra men misstänkt effektlösa åtgärdspacket är omöjlig, borgar knappast för att vi kommer fram till bra lösningar på framtidens problem.

Debatterna om växthuseffektens resultat (och de kraftiga intressen som finansierar "motvetenskap") påminner mycket om diskussionerna om DDT, asbest, rökning, ozonlagret, m m.

Vi har idag en närmast total vetenskaplig konsensus om att människan kommer att förändra jordens klimat. Det vi inte har svar på är hur mycket och vad det kommer att kosta i pengar och lidande.

Den artikeln du använder som motexempel är 5 år gammal och det är en evighet då det gäller klimatforskning. D v s dess slutsatser har med största sannolikhet invaliderats (jag kan inte bevisa detta då jag saknar fullständig sakkunskap för att kunna studera artikeln och matcha mot ny information). Om du tittar på vetenskapliga articklar de senaste (1-2) åren så kommer du inte och hitta några seriösa sådana som påstår att växthusefekten inte finns. Kontroversen finns inte bland vetenskapsmännen, den finns bland politikerna (som ogillar att ta beslut som kostar pengar).

Det stora problemet är att ett system så stort som jorden har stor eftersläpning. Jämför med ozonlagret. Man identifierade problemet ca 1985, man åtgärdade (delar av) problemet 1987 och de nuvarande beräkningarna talar om en stabilisering 2024 och läkning runt 2060-2070. Med sådan eftersläpning (och så liten förståelse av konsekvenserna av vårt handlande) så måste vi vara extremt försiktiga.

Jag gillar inte Kyotoavtalet heller, det är för vagt, löser inte problemet och har för många hål. Men det var det första steget mot en lösning, nästa steg kommer att bli bättre och nästa steg efter de komemr att vara ännu bättre, dels för att vetenskapen blir bättre, dels för att det politiska motståndet minskar.

Att vissa förespråkare för växthuseffekten är närmast hysteriska galningar håller jag med om. Men det är inget argument mot den, och att använda det som argument är argumentum ad hominem. Angrip tesen inte tesens förespråkare.

Så istället för att begära mer och mer bevis, så borde vi sätta oss ner och fundera över hur vi kan lösa problemet bättre.

Det jag diskuterar är inte primärt vetenskapliga rapporter hit och dit. Jag tror mig inte kunna kan avgöra frågan naturvetenskapligt. Min poäng är bara att man i dagsläget inte kan säga något med bestämdhet. Men vi riskerar en situation där flertalet väljer att upphöja växthusteorin den till något som inte får ifrågasättas. Jag ser i detta en risk att politiker gör exakt samma sak som kyrkan gjort de senaste femtonhundra åren. En teori som med viss argumentation (godtyckligt utvalda premisser) låter sannolik (Guds existens/koldioxidutsläppen skuld i klimatförändringen) politiseras och resulterar i lagar som begränsar medborgarnas frihet. Det kritiska tänkandet offras med motivet att om teorin är sann så slutar det med inferno.

PS! Några som hört av sig via epost har uppfattat min ordval felaktigt. När jag hänvisar till något som en "teori" så innebär inte detta nödvändigtvis att jag förnekar möjligheten att den är sann. En teori kan vara antingen sann eller falsk. Jag förstår att det kan missförstås eftersom många i dagligt språkbruk pratar om "teorier" som någonting falskt.

The EU and Europe's Postal Monopolies

Many Swedish libertarians are notorious eurosceptics because they see the EU merely as a bureaucratic organization that threatens free trade and open markets. If one read the proposed European Constitution, it is easy to understand why. Too much emphasis has been put on red-tape laws and directives that restrict the freedom of action necessary for a vibrant economy. If European business should stand a chance in the global competition, the EU member states must deregulate and slim the supranational organization. With this being said, I must insert that while the EU bureaucracy deserves much criticism, it also merits an encouraging pat on the back now and then. Like now when the European Commission pick a fight with the French by putting forward plans to liberalize Europe's postal services. From an article in The Economist:

This month the European Parliament starts work on a directive, drawn up by the European Commission, to remove the last monopolies in postal markets by 2009—the final stage in a slow and laborious liberalisation that began in 1992. Directives in 1997 and 2002 chipped away at the centuries-old monopolies enjoyed by national operators, and the proposed new law will open the whole market to competition by abolishing the "reserved area" on mail weighing less than 50 grams.

Växthusteorin bör ifrågasättas

Marcus Nilsson på bloggen Ge oss ett val har gjort en sammanfattning av klimatfrågan på vilken jag replikerat. Jag citerar mig själv:

Ingen kan bevisa att växthusteorin är osann just eftersom den är så luddig och bygger på godtyckliga forskningsrön. Det stämmer att de flesta klimatstudier pekar mot en global temperaturhöjning, men detta i sig är inget alarmerande eftersom jordens medeltemperatur aldrig varit konstant. 1700-talet sägs ha varit ovanligt varmt medan 1800-talet var ovanligt kallt (glaciärerna som nu smälter växte sig stora först då).

Det stora dilemmat i klimatforskningen är alla motstridiga resultat och bristerna i premisserna. För även om alla erkänner möjliga växthuseffekter så vet ingen med bestämdhet vad som skulle orsaka dessa. Samtliga framtidsprognoser bygger på datasimuleringar utförda av forskare som mer eller mindre godtyckligt valt ut vilka komponenter de vill föra in i sin beräkning. Ingen seriös forskare kan hävda att just han har tagit med alla de delar som bidrar till jordens klimatsystem. Vad de har gjort är att de lekt och gissat efter bästa förmåga.

Det problematiska är att dessa mycket osäkra prognoser används av politiska intressen på ett sätt som föranleder misstanken om andra ambitioner. Ta exempelvis utsläpp av koldioxid, som är den vanligaste måltavlan för "miljömedvetna" politiker. Varför är så många politiker, i synnerhet på vänsterkanten, intresserade att just koldioxid när forskning kring klimateffekterna av andra gaser visat sig vara mer entydiga? Tja, min gissning är att man helt enkelt vill ha ett vetenskapligt argument mot individualism, liberalism och kapitalism.

Nu kan man naturligtvis avfärda mig som en konspiratoriskt lagd nyliberal, och på det kan jag bara svara att kritik alltid är viktigt och att detta i synnerhet gäller när majoriteten ropar efter en politik som skulle omkullkasta nästan hela vår kultur. Att sluta köra bil, flyga, använda plastprodukter, etcetera, är ingen liten omställning. I synnerhet inte som kopplingen mellan koldioxid och global uppvärmning är så dåligt underbyggd.

En välrenommerad forskare som tydligt visat detta är Daniel H. Rothman, professor i geofysik vid Massachusetts Institute of Technology. I ett par artiklar (ej på internet) i Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences har han presenterat data som visar denna brist på koppling. Med ett enda undantag har det funnits mer koldioxid i atmosfären under alla kalla perioder än under varma.

Jag tror inte på växthusteorin förrän den är bättre underbyggd och mer precis. Och jag vill inte medverka till att slå sönder ett framgångsrikt ekonomiskt system till förmån för regleringar som enbart gynnar politiska intressen. Av denna anledning anser jag det vara legitimt att hålla frågan om växthusteorins sanningsvärde vid liv trots att allt fler vill diskutera dess praktiska politiska konsekvenser.

Capitalism Makes Fatties

Göran Greider, a well-known socialist leader-writer, blames liberal capitalism for human obesity in an article published in Aftonbladet. He's probably right. People are very skinny in every socialist country I know of. Cuban ration cards don't allow any filled stomachs, and North Korea's starvation politics is a thoroughly tested method of preventing fatty people. The best slim diet is a command economy with no civil liberties.

Jag gillar inte metoden, men när jag via Magnus Westerstrands och Johan Ingerös bloggar får veta att IF Metall Norrbotten i stora tidningsannonser låtit publicera hemtelefonnumren till två borgerliga riksdagsledamöter blir jag arg. Varför ska familjer och anhöriga behöva utstå telefonterror bara för att LO och socialdemokratin ogillar riksdagsmajoritetens beslut om a-kassan? Om det fanns en sådan utmärkelse skulle jag nominera Elizabeth Isitt i Malmö. Med två pappor överlever fler

Från en artikel i Dagens Nyheter:

Trots att det till en början låter orimligt så kan en homosexuell relation ha en evolutionär fördel. Det är särskilt tydligt bland fåglar som svanar eller flamingo. Där är hannarna betydligt större och starkare än honorna och två hannar kan därför försvara ett mycket större revir.

Det är bäst undersökt hos svarta svanar i Australien där hannar inte sällan bildar homosexuella par. Honor kommer till hanparet, har sex med den ena eller bägge hannarna, lägger sina ägg i deras rede, men blir sedan bortjagade.

Ungarna i ett sådant homosexuellt par har hela tio gånger så stor chans att överleva jämfört med ungarna i ett heterosexuellt svanpar.

Slovene Euro Coins

I have written about my interest in coins before, so naturally I must write something on the newest members of the euro-coin family. Slovenia joined the euro zone on 1 January, which gives me a new set of euro coins to collect. I haven't had the opportunity to get hold of any yet, but until I do I can study a detailed document (pdf) published by the Bank of Slovenia. It contains great images and short explanatory text passages to each coin. Seen above are the €2 (left) and €1 (right) coins. On the first one, we see a portrait and written tribute to Slovene poet France Prešeren. On the second coin, we see Primož Trubar, who was the founder of the Protestant Church of Slovenia and author of the first printed book in Slovene.

Droger framkallar retoriskt haveri

Jag förväntar mig inga färdiga analyser från Expressens kolumnist Britta Svensson, därför var jag föga förvånad när hon häromdagen upprepade de vanligaste fördomarna om oss som är kritiska mot den svenska narkotikapolitiken. Som brukligt i sådana här sammanhang så blandades avkriminalisering samman med uppmaning och i ett slag förvandlades alla som inte tror att narkomani bäst bekämpas med tull och polis till knarkpropagandister. Jag suckar högt och himlar med ögonen. Varför har vi ett sådant torftigt debattklimat i Sverige när hela Europa diskuterar frågan seriöst?

Kvinnliga matematiker har små bröst

Bloggaren Blogge gör upp med "PK-ismen" som alltmer hotar oönskade resultat av vetenskapliga studier. Han slår fast att det är skillnad på män och kvinnor men att kunskap om detta inte hotar jämställdheten. Jag håller med i princip, även om det tyvärr finns många exempel på hur vetskap om olikheter motiverat särbehandling. Jag citerar artikeln på Blogges blogg:

Kritik har riktats mot en tidigare tes från [Annica] Dahlström, nämligen att kvinnliga matematiker skulle vara begåvade med mindre bröst. Reflexmässigt har detta avfärdats i media och bloggosfären som mer eller mindre ett skämt man inte kan ta på allvar. Min fråga är bara: har någon empiriskt undersökt detta? Är det inte så att ni avfärdar detta påstående för att det hotar er egen världsbild, att det helt enkelt inte får vara sant? Hm?

Vetenskap fungerar så att teser som framförs ska vara empiriskt verifierbara (åtminstone i princip). Denna tes är empiriskt verifierbar. Vill man vederlägga den måste man således ta fram statistiskt underlag för ett antal slumpmässigt utvalda kvinnliga matematiker och en kontrollgrupp av ickematematiker. Finner man inte en signifikant avvikelse har man vederlagt tesen, och på motsvarande sätt har man bekräftat tesen om man finner en signifikant avvikelse. Däremot vederlägger man inte en tes genom att hysteriskt asflabba, förfalla till känslomässiga utbrott eller att vräka invektiv mot den som hävdar tesen – man gör sig bara löjlig.

Europe Deserves Better

From an article in the Guardian, I learn that German chancellor Angela Merkel calls for the resurrection of the proposed EU constitution. At a visit to the European Parliament in Strasbourg yesterday, she said, "We must give Europe a soul. We have to find the soul of Europe."

I share her enthusiasm for a "European soul". After two millennia of war and nationalism, Europe must develop of a proud sense Europeanness. We are still Swedes, Danes, Spaniards, Dutch, Germans, and so on, but we are Europeans too.

A European Constitution could play an important part in the advancement of Europe, but the proposed document is not adequate for that purpose. A constitution should only be a slim document that limits and defines the powers of the European institutions (the Parliament, Court, and Commission) and not a massive amount of text that regulates nearly every aspect of civil society. The document Merkel wants to turn into a Construction for Europe is flawed, overworked, and should be deprecated. Europe deserves better.

Conservatism Gone Mad

In a recent entry I mentioned Dinesh D'Souza, an American conservative author and intellectual known for his extreme views on cultural issues. His latest book, entitled The Cultural Left and Its Responsibility for 9/11, has now been reviewed by Warren Bass for the Washington Post. I quote the article:

Here's the main argument, such as it is. Why has al-Qaeda targeted America? "Not because of U.S. troops in Mecca," D'Souza writes. "Not even because of Israel. … The suicide bombers of radical Islam are not blowing themselves up because they are distressed over the Gulf War of 1991 or because they are in solidarity with the Palestinians." Rather, "what bin Laden objected to was America staying in the Middle East, importing with it the immoral ingredients of American values and culture." That makes the left "responsible for 9/11" because it "has fostered a decadent American culture that angers and repulses traditional societies" and has waged "an aggressive global campaign to undermine the traditional patriarchal family and to promote secular values in non-Western cultures." In sum, "the cultural left and its allies in Congress, the media, Hollywood, the nonprofit sector, and the universities are the primary cause of the volcano of anger toward America that is erupting from the Islamic world."

Laila Freivalds's Missing Letter

Here is the letter Sweden's former Minister for Foreign Affairs, Laila Freivalds, wrote to Yemen's Forgein Minister on 9 February 2006. The day after, the Social Democratic Government forced the mentioned website to close. So much for the defence of the freedom of expression.

At the time, Mrs Freivalds denied the letter's existence. She claimed to know nothing about any contact with the Yemeni government. Now, when a journalist has found the letter, she says that the letter is not a real letter but rather a message. An absurd claim; appropriate a politician known for her inability to take any responsibility for her own actions.

Your Excellency,
The caricatures of the Prohet Mohammed are disgraceful. I fully understand thet Moslems feel insulted and that their values have been violated. It is my firm conviction that we must show respect for each other's religiois beliefs. This conviction is shared by a vast majority of Swedes. I recently met leaders of all political parties represented in the Swedish Parliament and I know they all feel the same way.

Freedom of religion is constitutionally guaranteed in Sweden, as is freedom of speech and media. This includes an absolute prohibition against censorship. But this freedom entails responsibility and respect for other freedoms and all—media, politicians, individuals—must use it in a respectful way. In general this is the case, also in Sweden. All major media outlets have dealt with this issue in a responsible and respectful way.

However, a small extreme right wing, and xenophobic group—Sverigedemokraterna—has launched a cartoon contest regarding the Prophet Mohammed on its web site. It is a provocation, with the sole aim of creating reactions which may serve this group's own somber aims all of which lack support in Swedish society. I find this act to be disgraceful and insulting. I am ashamed and I apologize that in my country there are individuals who are disrespectful and inconsiderate and who abuse the freedom of expression to manifest such kind of views in a malicious intent. I will always under all circumstances defend the freedom of expression but from this manifestation I disassociate myself. We take it very seriously. Sweden's Attorney General and the police are closely following developments.

A dangerous situation is evolving. It can be in nobody's interest that we allow the situation to escalate. As responsible leaders and as compassionate individuals we must try to calm down the situation and confront all extremists within the boundaries of the law.

Sweden since many years undertakes efforts to promote national and international dialogues between cultures and civilizations through various initiatives. Organizations of the Swedish civil society are engaged in continuing dialogue among each other and with the Government.

We regularly meet in Stockholm with representative of Muslim countries. I intend to pursue this indispensable exchange of views and look forward to engaging further with your country.

Who Exactly Is a Moderate Arab Leader?

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice praised moderate Arab leaders on her latest visit to the Middle East. But what exactly defines a "moderate Arab leader"? Michael Freund asks that question in his latest column in the Jerusalem Post:

Standing next to Abbas at a press conference in Ramallah on Sunday, the secretary of state practically gushed with enthusiasm when she said in her opening remarks, "I want everyone to know, particularly the Palestinian people, how much we admire the leadership of President Abbas as a leader of the Palestinian people."

And yet, it was just last Thursday, three days prior to meeting with Rice, that Abbas publicly called upon Palestinians to attack Israel.

Moynihan's Reply

Michael Moynihan responds to my criticism:

American bias—irrational and rational—against Europe is indeed real. But you infer that I am guilty of double-standard by means of exclusion. This, I'm afraid, wasn't the purpose of my droning little talk; I spoke of what I know best, as a passport-carrying member of the Evil Empire. And yes, I know that your suggestion—that I tackle American distrust of Europe—is tangentially related, though time constraints and, dare I say, my area of expertise were both limiting factors. Had I chosen to discuss a corollary anti-Europeanism, I would offer a qualified agreement with you.

You are indeed right: a dispiritingly large segment of the populist/popular right is Europhobic, though it often pops up in politically opportune moments and in relation to major international events like the Iraq War and 9-11. Put simply, we don't care about you as much as you care about us (for what I think to be obvious reasons). Of course the stereotypes of French effeteness and cowardice, for example, long predate these most recent moments of political apocalypse, but they surely weren't dominating the popular discourse (that, believe it or not, includes Fox). A related, though somewhat insignificant, point: The Pavlovian response of the talk radio crowd to "European elites" is often coupled with an admiration of the (perceived) intellectualism and cultural supremacy of Europe. Those who denounce the "East Coast types" in America—employing embarrassing Spiro Agnew-type phraseology ("pointy headed liberals" type stuff) are, generally, the same crowd that would be rooked by a reductio ad absurdum anti-European argument. But these types are at once acknowledging the intelligence of their opponents while scorning their worldview. Ridiculous, of course, though somehow I would prefer to be hated for a surfeit of "culture" rather than a lack of it. But that's just me.

From accumulated experience—and this is admittedly anecdotal—Europe is often venerated by those in the intelligentsia; those in the bigger cities on both the left and right. Sweden especially. Those who have traveled to Western Europe—this is the most common connection, not to shortchange our Bulgarian friends—might not agree with a thirty hour work week, but how they bore you with encomiums to the museums, the food, the architecture…the feeling of the place!

And while Americans often put the far-right Ann Coulter on the best-seller list (and, periodically, her more thoughtful "comrades" on the right), we also consume massive amounts of Michael Moore and Noam Chomsky, just two examples of far-left polemicists that recently charted on the New York Times bestseller list (As of this writing, the NYT lists two books scoffing at the pious Christian (Dawkins, Harris), a Barak Obama tract and the pitchfork populism of Bill O'Reilly). In Sweden, for instance, there is no diversity of idiocy. So while there are plenty that hate Europeans, they are also counterbalanced by those that hate themselves. To Susan Sontag, America was "Yahooland"; the West "a cancer." I think it is rather obvious that the proportion of Americans who dislike their own country is far greater than Swedes who have contempt for the folkhem. This, naturally, throws the comparison out of whack.

It should also be noted that while I often address the subject of anti-Americanism, I don't mean to suggest that there are no rational critiques of American culture and foreign policy. There are. But in Stockholm's popular press, these opinions are drowned out by the hysterics like Linderborg, Klein, Greider, Jonsson, et al. By relying so heavily on those who long-ago forfeited any pretense of objectivity—I am thinking of Zizek, Zinn, Chomsky, Pilger—the left-leaning Swedish media is achieving a political goal at the expense of seriousness. It is a different sort of "dumbing down," but dumbing down nevertheless.

You also mention Dinesh D'Souza, who once looked like a serious thinker but has since dove into the fever swamps of the moralist right. While in America last week, I thumbed through a review copy of his latest book which, by its very title, attempts to blame the 9-11 attacks not on Europe but on a debased American culture; pornographized, Britney-fied. I urge you to read Jean Baudrillard's silly book America, in which our philosopher-hero sneers at the vile consumerism and "fakeness" of American culture. The old left of Europe and the new right in America, it would seem, are converging.

As I was writing this email, I received an email link to that indispensable website The Local. It seems an appropriate place to end communication:

"An American woman has been refused treatment by a doctor in Blekinge in southern Sweden because of her nationality. The woman's husband has now reported the incident to the Medical Responsibility Board."

I will diverge from my one-note rants on anti-Americanism when you guys stop giving me so much good material to work with.

Different Sorts of Bias

A reader comments on my entry on Michael Moynihan's podcast programme:

I wish you had a comments section in your blog as I always want to comment on what I read there. I saw your latest post on the bias of both the Europeans and the Americans. I agree that some Americans are biased towards the Europeans but I think on the whole there is a difference in quality and quantity.

There was an interesting article in the Times of London (and the Atlanta Journal Constitution) on an Argentinian/British, famous professor who got tackled and arrested for jaywalking here in Atlanta last week. You might even want to write about it. If you do a search on Felipe Fernando-Armesto there you will see it. One article had reader comments following it. Many British people wasted no time in talking about how this showed how barbaric all American people are and how no one should ever visit it. In contrast, few Americans made any comments on the character of "all" British people.

This is what I get in general here. I hear hardly any negative comments on the Europeans in any way, other than complaints that they are anti-American and that they don't back us up, such as on the War on Terror. I hardly ever hear an American, especially an ordinary non-media, American say a European is barbaric or spoiled or arrogant, or is like such and such television character. We have been taught since we are young not to make such generalizing statements about a whole people (at least not in public!). That is how a country with so many races and ethnicities and classes basically gets along. I feel that Europeans still have not developed this sensibility, even though they think they have and their media and their people engage in stereotyping Americans all day long as if we were some sort of strange anthropological species. I don't think this is a good thing and I wonder if there is some way to change this.

Michael Moynihan's Blind Spot

The Swedish think tank Timbro has produced a series of podcasts. Twelve people have made and profiled as many hour-long programmes. Yesterday, I listened to American journalist Michael Moynihan's programme (mp3), in which he talks about European prejudges against America and the insulting idea that New York somehow is "more European" (more leftist) than other parts of the United States.

It's a good programme, and Moynihan is right—many Europeans have a dubious perception of America—but while listening to him, I'm getting increasingly annoyed with his unbalanced view of the "cross-Atlantic" bias. I don't blame him; I understand and share his concern over European anti-Americanism. What bothers me is that he doesn't say a word about the American hostility towards Europe often voiced by conservatives like Dinesh D'Souza and Ann Coulter. A Note on Scientology

A reader comments on my entry on Scientology:

I just wanted to let you know that what you wrote in this post is not true. The story of the supposed tragedy that happened 75 million years ago in this area is not "a core belief of Scientology"—it is simply data that surfaced during past-life recall in session in enough cases to be considered significant.

This is not promoted within the Church as a "belief" nor a "dogma". Scientology's "core beliefs" gravitate around personal spiritual improvement, not around aliens.

Incidentally, to learn about such things, you don't have to "spend all your savings", as they're available in a 20-dollar tape called "Ron's Journal 1967" and in a set of tapes entitled "The Whole Track Tapes".

When all you read about a philosophy is what detractors write, you get a biased view.

Scientology Next for David Beckham?

Footballer David Beckham contemplates joining the Church of Scientology. This according to an article in the New York Daily News. The Scientologists have had great success in recruiting celebrities. I find it hard to understand what's so attractive, but the "religion" is, well, interesting. So here it is—as a service to you and the Beckhams—the core of the Scientologist belief system:

Find it difficult to comprehend? Well, that's probably because you haven't spent all your savings on hundreds of self-knowledge courses. If you do, you might learn to nourish the alien within. Would that not work for you, there's always Kabbalah…

Misconstruing Health Care

Talking to Europeans (particularly non-Brits) about things like health care and welfare programmes is a treat. Most of the Europeans I meet seem to believe that huge numbers of Americans get no health care at all, while the rich few wallow in luxury. In fact, the biggest problems uninsured Americans face are not doctors refusing to treat them, but the fact that they use the incredibly inconvenient emergency room for most of their care, and that a really bad illness could force them into bankruptcy. (Some also believe that it reduces quality of care for chronic illnesses like diabetes, but this is much less clear). Not admirable, by any means, but a far cry from the tortured visions of poor Americans dying at the hospital's door, their pleas for care unheeded.

Americans on the other hand, the overwhelming majority of whom are insured, seem to believe that millions of Europeans die each year from lack of treatment. The reality is much less grim; a fair number of Europeans go without hip replacements and other quality of life treatments, and some do die on waiting lists, but many of those people would have died anyway, because they have nasty diseases with life expectancies measured in months. America caters, expensively, to their desire to live a few extra weeks or months; Europe does not.

De politiska partiernas kris

"Jag är i dag inte medlem i något parti. Jag har däremot en extremt kort och inaktiv period bakom mig med medlemskap i Kalmars socialdemokratiska studentförening, och en ännu kortare och passivare period med medlemskap i Malmens socialdemokratiska förening här lokalt i Kalmar. Flera år efter att den senare perioden upphört, under vilka jag slutat betala medlemsavgiften och upprepat mailat om att bli struken från medlemslistorna, så ringde i fjol en man ur föreningens valberedning upp mig, för att erbjuda mig plats på partiets lista till kyrkovalet! Jag hade då aldrig visat mig på ett enda möte, och var alltså sedan länge egentligen inte längre medlem, men det hejdade inte honom. Sådant kunde man lösa, menade han. Först då jag förklarade att jag inte är medlem i Svenska kyrkan, gav han upp. Kan de etablerade partiernas problem och brister blottas på ett tydligare sätt?"

Rosemari's Sense of Fib

Rosemari Södergren, a leftist blogger and employee of the Swedish Trade Union Confederation, has made some strange comments about Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt and a visit he made to the Republican Party during the 2000 presidential election. She is trying to make out that the Moderate Party, of which I'm a member, has ties to the Republicans and that Mr Reinfeldt is now "hiding his relation with Mr Bush". She writes:

Officially the conservative Party in Sweden, which Reinfeldt is the leader of, are supporting The Democrats. But then, why participate in the election campaign for the repuclikan candidate Mr Bush? […] It is very strange that the top of the conservatives say they are supporting the democrats but at the same time obviously are also supporting the republicans.

I'm not sure where she gets this idea from, but my guess is that Mr Reinfeldt's support for John Kerry in the 2004 presidential election has something to do with it. It's untrue nonetheless. The Moderate Party has expressed official support for neither the Democrats nor the Republicans.

Progressive Moderates shouldn't adjust to the left-wingers and their obsession with American politics and George Bush. The Moderate Party is not a conservative party per se, although many of its members are. Personally, I'm very much a libertarian representative of the Moderate Party. It is true, however, that some Moderates sympathize with Bush's politics. It is also true that some Social Democrats sympathize with Fidel Castro. This does not mean that the Moderates are pro-Bush or that the Social Democrats are fascistic communists. That would be a corny suggestion.

The Social Democrats need an enemy they can bash rhetorically. That is why they so desperately try to label their opponents "conservative" and pro-Bush—by doing so they hope to establish a self-image of radicalism and progressivism. The truth, however, is that Swedish present-day conservatism—in nearly every sense of the term—is tightly tied to the Social Democrats, the Swedish Trade Union Confederation, and people like Rosemari Södergren.

Furthermore, we must not forget that the Social Democrats and former PM Göran Persson expressed great affection for President Bush while in government. It was not until they were forced out of office that they joined the extreme left and engaged in fierce anti-Americanism.

Alexander the Great

Two days ago, Johan Norberg, Sweden's most prominent libertarian intellectual, announced on his blog that his wife has given birth to a boy. The new parents have named him Alexander "because he is great". I congratulated the father in an email.

Now, this got me to remember a superb book about Alexander the Great I read about ten years ago. It's written in Latin by the Roman historian Quintus Curtius Rufus, but is available in an English translation published in paperback by Penguin. I recommend anyone interested in Alexander to read it. Parts of original manuscript has been lost, but what's left of it is well worth reading anyway.

Som man frågar får man svar

Under dagen har man i Sveriges Radios nyhetssändningar kunnat höra att 97% av svenskarna vill införa kameraövervakning på allmänna platser och att hela 87% anser att polisen ska få använda buggning och hemlig avläsning av datorer. Siffrorna kommer från en ny undersökning från Statistiska Centralbyrån. Men det är en konstig undersökning med tanke på frågornas formulering. Exempelvis denna:

Tycker du att kameraövervakning ska vara tillåten eller otillåten på allmänna platser om det behövs för att förhindra eller avslöja terrordåd?

Vem svarar nej på den frågan? Jag är emot kameraövervakning, men om det vore så att terrorister började spränga människor i luften runt om i Sverige så skulle jag nog kunna tänka mig lite fler kameror.

Nej till kontrollstat

Försvarsminister Mikael Odenberg (m) har lagt fram ett förslag som innebär att all epost och telekommunikation mellan Sverige och utlandet lagligt kan läsas och avlyssnas av Försvarets radioanstalt (FRA). Det är ett vansinnigt förslag som inte är försvarbart om man verkligen tror på frihet. I gårdagens Dagens Nyheter skrev moderate riksdagsledamoten Henrik von Sydow en utmärkt debattartikel om detta. Jag citerar slutet:

Vi måste akta oss för att bygga upp en kontrollstat som – trots de goda syften som i dag föreligger – lätt kan missbrukas för andra ändamål av en annan regering i en annan tid. Vi kan helt enkelt inte utgå från att våra makthavare alltid är goda – så varför då sätta verktyg på plats som riskerar att bli till grundskott mot den enskilda människans grundläggande fri- och rättigheter?

Jag instämmer helt. Förslaget måste förkastas.

Amsterdam Nostalgia

I spent the New Year in Amsterdam, the city that was my home for nearly five years until I left in 2003. While there, I took a stroll through my old neighbourhood, which is called de Sparndammerbuurt in Dutch. It's located slightly west of the city centre, in a district named Westerpark after the beautiful park in its middle.

I'm not much of a photographer, but I snapped a few pictures to look at when I'm nostalgic. Seen above is my old home in Zaandijkstraat, a street just next to the park and the railway tracks that carries the trains from the airport, The Hague, Rotterdam and Haarlem. My flat was on the third floor (fourth floor to Americans, Scanians, and Danes). The three windows with drawn white curtains were mine.

I really love Amsterdam. Sometimes I feel a sense of longing for the city. To many, Amsterdam is only coffeeshops and the Red Light District, but to me it is the place where I can breathe and relax in company of good friends—it's my home away from home.

By the way, if you're ever in Amsterdam, take bus 22 from the Central Station and go to Sparndammerstraat (the journey takes about ten minutes). Walk to Knollendamstraat and visit Coffeeshop Heavenly. Its owner is a friend of mine. Take a coffee and experience a part of town that is not adapted to tourists. Westerpark is genuinely Dutch.

Homosexuality Is a Product of Capitalism

Swedish Communist MP Kalle Larsson refers to the Maoist guerrilla as Nepal's "democratic movement" and urge people to give them their support. In reality, like so many times before, the socialist idea of democracy includes mass killings of gays and lesbians. From an article in The Australian:

Nepal's hardline Maoist guerillas, on the brink of achieving effective government power in the Himalayan kingdom, have turned their attention to so-called "social pollutants" and denounced homosexuals as "a by-product of capitalism".

Emerging from a decade of fighting government forces, the insurgents have launched a clean-up drive against polygamy, polyandry, infidelity, drunkenness and homosexuality—even though many gays were previously aligned with the Maoists against the autocratic rule of the widely despised King Gyanendra.

Maoist cadres, seen regularly on the streets of Kathmandu as they move towards taking over key roles in the Government under a peace accord worked out with Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, have warned home owners not to let out rooms to gays and lesbians. They have also announced "a zero-tolerance policy towards homosexuality" and a crackdown on pornographic films. A Maoist commander allegedly told a group of gay men: "We are against any aberrant activity that could have a negative and vitiating effect on society." And when members of the gay rights group Blue Diamond Society met Maoist leader Dev Gurung, he reportedly said homosexuality was a by-product of capitalism. "Under Soviet rule and when China was still very much a communist state, there were no homosexuals in the Soviet Union or China," Mr Gurung is reported to have said. "Now they are moving towards capitalism, homosexuals may have arisen there as well. So homosexuality is a product of capitalism. Under socialism this kind of problem does not exist."

Is it time for yet another genocide that everybody ignore because the slaughtered "chose to be that way"?

Socialdemokratin är en enmansshow

"Socialdemokratin är ingen enmansshow", skriver Jonas Morian på sin blogg.

Det möjligt att socialdemokrater inte själva uppfattar det så, men jag tror jag talar för de flesta andra när jag säger att socialdemokratin både under Olof Palme och Göran Persson (och tidigare) varit just en enmansshow. Faktum är att jag dristar mig till att säga att både deras svaghet och styrka ligger just i att socialdemokratiska aktivister uppfattar sig som delar av en rörelse fastän deras partiledare mer än andra agerar som monarker av Gud nåde. Det är en svaghet eftersom partiet faller när folket tröttnat på ledaren. Det är en styrka då politiska gräsrötter jobbar bättre när de känner sig betydelsefulla. Men vad gäller "vanligt folk" så föredrar de skrämmande ofta en stark ledare – en "landsfader". Det är därför som trendkänsliga journalister och mediastrateger helt gjort om Sveriges flerpartisystem till ett de facto tvåpartisystem.

David Cameron's popularity

Things are looking good for UK Conservative leader David Cameron. In a new party member poll, he gets a 71% approval rating. From the Tory Diary blog:

Cameron's position improved during December. Satisfaction rose from 67% to 71% and dissatisfaction levels eased from 32% to 28%.

53% of members think it fairly likely that David Cameron will be Prime Minister after the next General Election and nearly 19% think it very likely.

68% think that the party is on the right course with 26% thinking it to be on the wrong track.

The Power over Wants and Desires

During last year's election campaign I heard many dedicated advocates of the "new moderate"-strategy say that libertarians (like myself) must adopt to the reality that every Swede is formed by the Social Democrats. People don't know anything else since Sweden in effect has had a one-party state for the past seventy years. I came to think about this when I read a passage in a book on power structure earlier today:

To put the matter sharply, A may exercise power over B by getting him to do what he does not want to do, but he also exercises power over him by influencing, shaping, or determining his very wants. Indeed, is it not the supreme exercise of power to get another or others to have the desires you want them to have—that is, to secure their compliance by controlling their thoughts and desires.

Not My Candidate

From a press release by the EPP-ED group in the European Parliament:

Joseph Daul MEP (UMP, France) has today been elected new Chairman of the EPP-ED Group in the European Parliament. Mr Daul has been a Member of the European Parliament since 1999.

I don't know much about Mr Daul, but from what I have learned today I'd say it was a bad choice by the conservative MEPs. And like many British Conservatives, I think it's time now for Swedish conservatives and libertarians in the Moderate Party to consider an exit from the parliamentarian group. Perhaps cooperation with the British might be workable: an Anglo-Scandinavian Conservative Group.

Meta

As my regular readers might notice, I have made some small changes on my website. The most important being that I have added a calendar where I will list meetings and appointments. I decided to do this since I began my life as a "real" politician on New Year's Day. After the Moderate Party's success in the September general election, I suddenly became an elected representative. I am now a local councillor, a juryman of the Malmö City Court, and a member of the local tax committee. I will continue to blog about the "important stuff" as before, therefore I'll try to limit the reports from my new political life to important or extraordinary things. Let's face it, most things that goes on in local every-day politics are boring to read about. However, as a service to myself, the electorate, and those interested in what I do, I now have an online calendar.

It might seem silly to write the calendar in English, but I have chosen to do so since many of my friends are foreigners and about a third of Malmö's residents are non-native speakers of Swedish. Besides, native Swedes tend to understand simple English without any difficulties.

Gay Extinction

Andrew Sullivan writes about homosexuality and natural science in The Times and comes across some interesting supposition:

Maybe hormonal manipulation in utero could make homosexuality less likely in a sheep—or a child. Or maybe in the future, research like that being done now on sheep could be used to detect homosexual orientation in foetuses or babies—and prevent it. Why not, if that's what parents wish?

The answer, of course, is an ethical no-brainer. Experimenting on other human beings crosses a bright moral line—even when that other human being is in your own womb. There is no medical reason for meddling with anyone's sexual orientation, let alone in the crucial first months of a human being's life. And the potential for all sorts of unintended consequences is huge. Most ethical doctors would abhor such practices. And rightly so. Laws could even be passed, and enforced, to ban them.

But what of the darker scenario in which we merely discover scientific clues to the origins of homosexuality in human embryos and allow the potentially gay ones to be selectively aborted? That, it seems to me, is by far the likelier scenario. In fact, we'd be naive not to expect something like it.

We already have widespread gender-selective abortion, with fewer and fewer girls being born in the developing world. And most parents across the globe are far more hostile to the idea of a gay child than of a daughter. Tests that could infer even a slightly higher probability of homosexuality in foetuses could lead to the equivalent of a "final solution" to the existence of gay people—the dream of bigots for millenniums.

I'm convinced that homosexuality is caused by nature (or God, if you prefer) and that scientists eventually will find its root. This, of course, will probably give parents-to-be the opportunity to terminate any pregnancy that could result in a gay child. It's a disturbing thought for many, but to me it's a good thing. If societies are homophobic—and most are—it may not be a bad thing not to be born into that. Sullivan exemplifies with the current situation where female and handicapped foetuses are routinely aborted in favour of "normal" male foetuses. Nature (or God) has nothing to do with it; it's all down to human cultural and political beliefs. And these are the beliefs we organize our lives by. They are what make us human. I therefore see nothing wrong with aborting foetuses for whatever reason. The important thing is not to preserve a certain gay population but to enable those living a good life. Sullivan, too, is optimistic:

[T]he natural origins and ubiquity of homosexuality suggest a deep evolutionary purpose behind it, which we interrupt at our peril. Knowing more, in other words, need not mean hating more. Complete ignorance of homosexuality gave us centuries of brutality, bigotry and murder. Could greater knowledge lead to something far more benign?

I think he's right. Homosexuality serves a purpose and it will not go away by itself. To be successfully exterminated, all homosexual foetuses must be terminated. I wonder whether those most devoted to anti-gay sentiments are willing to temper with nature and humankind in that way. After all, most of them do claim to be men of God. But as I hinted earlier, I don't think that is worry for gay people but rather a concern for those who fear God. To never have existed is far less of a threat than to face eternity in Hell.

Länge leve familjen

Domstolen slår fast att den kvinnliga sambon till pojkens biologiska mamma ska erkännas juridiskt som femåringens tredje förälder. Pojkens biologiska pappa, som anges på födelseattesten, är god vän till båda kvinnorna och är aktiv förälder till pojken. De båda kvinnorna har inte velat adoptera pojken eftersom det skulle beröva pappan hans ställning som förälder.

Sådana här nyheter gör mig glad. Jag har svårt för vänsterradikalernas "död åt familjen"-snack. Det är ju inte familjen som är problemet utan den allt för snäva definitionen.

Ännu en statlig offensiv mot hasch

I brist på tid idag och några dagar framöver så hinner jag inte skriva så mycket som jag skulle vilja. Men lite kort vill jag bara uppmärksamma en artikel i Svenska Dagbladet. Det handlar om svenska polisens nya storsatsning mot cannabis. Enligt artikeln finns det främst två argument för denna nya satsning:

• För det första anses cannabis farligt i sig. Ett långvarigt missbruk kan orsaka personlighetsförändringar, och drogen anses vara inkörsport till tyngre narkotika.
• För det andra är cannabis en viktig inkomstkälla för organiserad brottslighet.

Alla intervjuade tycks ense om det förträffliga i att satsa massor med skattepengar på en (med stor sannolikhet meningslös) aktion mot cannabissmugglingen. Något annat var nog inte att vänta, de intervjuade är alla i statlig tjänst. Men intressant för en liberal skeptiker som jag är att artikeln också rymmer orsaken till de oönskade effekterna av narkotikabruk. Tord Modin, chef för rikskriminalens underrättelsetjänst, säger:

– Den organiserade brottsligheten växer i omfattning. Ju mer den etablerar sig, desto mer ökar faran för samhället i stort. De här grupperna drar sig inte för något, utan är beredda att ge sig på samhällets representanter, säger han.

Ligorna tjänar grova pengar på cannabis. Ett parti på tio kilo som köps i Nederländerna för 150 000 kronor kan säljas för 300 000 kronor i Sverige.

En och annan reagerar kanske för att jag skriver om "oönskade effekter av narkotikabruk", men vad man bör komma ihåg är att folk röker hasch för att de vill må bra, inte för att de gillar kriminella gäng. I Utopia där alla mår bra kanske ingen behöver droger, men så länge verkligheten erbjuder få andra nöjen med samma intensitet så måste vi lära oss att narkotika är en del av vårt samhälle. Det som skrämmer mig är det oförstånd med vilket politiker och statliga myndigheter brutaliserar samhället. För det är tyvärr så att varje gång polisen och tullverket är framgångsrika så skapar de incitament för fler att börja smuggla professionellt samtidigt som gängens interna lojalitet stärks och metoderna blir brutalare. Skadorna av den repressiva narkotikapolitiken är i själva verket värre än de som drogen orsakar.

Sveriges tramsiga samhällsdebatt

Bara ett par timmar efter att jag lämnat Amsterdam möts jag av det svenska tramset om nyliberalism och sexualförakt som trots sin unika svenskhet emellanåt får oss som bor här att glömma hur extremt reaktionärt och lutherskt vårt land är. Detta är landet där kommunister och socialdemokrater slåss mot individualism och "den sexuella revolutionen" med samma frenesi som Vatikanen. Jag skulle faktiskt inte bli förvånad om vänsterpartiet och socialdemokraterna åtföljd av en konflikträdd borgerlighet plötsligt började agitera mot den fria aborten. Det vore en logisk fortsättning. I synnerhet som det tycks räcka med att man hittar lite olyckliga kvinnor med passande erfarenheter. (Just olyckliga kvinnor med skuldkänslor och ånger efter en abort är något som den kristna högern använder flitigt i sin propaganda. Den amerikanska tokhögern och den svenska feministvänstern liknar varandra i moralfrågor och retorik så mycket att det faktiskt är lätt att ta miste.)

The View from an Airport Window

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport at noon today. I'm on my way to the aeroplane after a quick lunch in one of the restaurants, but before I leave my table, I snap this picture with my mobile-phone camera. There's something melancholic about airports, yet they are one of our best inventions—humanity's triumph over nature: we were not meant to fly, but we do it nonetheless.
