Holocaust Remembrance Day

pink_triangle.jpg

Holocaust Remembrance Day should have been observed on 2 May 2008, but since this is a Friday, Israel will observe it tomorrow. On this day, the world remembers the six million Jews that were killed by the Nazis. Unfortunately, no day is set aside for remembering the many gay men killed in concentration camps. No surprise really considering that most of the ideas that motivated the killings of gays are still popular in wide circles, not least among people that should know better than to attack minority groups.

When I visited Berlin last year, I snapped a few photographs of the gay memorial at Nollendorfplatz in Schöneberg, an inner-city district emptied of its vibrant gay culture by the Nazis in the mid-1930s. I post two of the pictures here. This is just one of many similar monuments in Europe. And in Germany, more are planned as people recognize the unjust treatment of gays in the past. On 12 December 2003, the German Federal Lower House (Bundestag) decided to establish an official memorial site in central Berlin. To my knowledge, this site is not yet finished.

The biggest and by far most famous gay memorial to date is the Homomonument in Amsterdam. A beautiful place at the heart of the city where gay tourists and others often stop to pray and lay down flowers in memory of those lost to homophobic violence.

Be Aware of Paedophiles

Blogge has made some nice, alternative road signs. This one is my favourite. It warns of paedophiles.

What Makes a Terrorist?

I have just read two books on terrorism: Jessica Stern’s Terror in the Name of God and Mark Juergensmeyer’s Terror in the Mind of God. The two titles are similar, but the two authors have somewhat different definitions of the terms terrorism and terrorist. In Stern’s opinion, a terrorist is someone who attacks non-combatants, i.e. civilians and unarmed people who are not participating in warfare. To Juergensmeyer , a terrorist is someone who has been found guilty of committing a terrorist act, or has been proven to planning to commit one. The two definitions may seem similar, but in my opinion, there is at least one important difference. While Stern is more empathetic towards the victims of terrorism, Juergensmeyer—judicially correct as his definition may be—is more inclined to protect the formal rights of the perpetrator. Furthermore, I think it is obvious the two writers base their viewpoints on two opposite theories of ethics. Stern has a more objective approach to terrorism than Juergensmeyer, whose take on the subject I consider morally relativistic: This becomes apparent when the latter writes about the term “terrorist”:

To a large extent the use of the term depends on one’s world view: if the world is perceived as peaceful, violent acts appear as terrorism. If the world is thought to be at war, violent acts may be regarded as legitimate. They may be seen as preemptive strikes, as defensive tactics in an ongoing battle, or as symbols indicating to the world that it is indeed in a state of grave and ultimate conflict. (Juergensmeyer 2003: 9)

There is no doubt in my mind that many terrorists and their supporters and apologists would subscribe to this imprecise definition of terrorism, and the open-mindedness it offers may serve a purpose when studying terrorism, but it is nonetheless unfair to the victims. We must remember that what separates terrorist acts of violence from regular warfare is the target. While legitimate warfare must follow the rules set out by international conventions—not least the Fourth Geneva Convention and its protection of civilians—terrorist warfare regularly disregard any such concerns. In fact—as Juergensmeyer points out when he writes about the conflict in Northern Ireland—the terrorist strategy is to attack civilians when they are the most vulnerable. Therefore, I think it is wrong to even suggest any uncertainty about what is terrorism. Stern offers the correct definition as set out by international law:

In this book terrorism will be defined as an act or threat of violence against non-combatants with the objective of exacting revenge, intimidating, or otherwise influencing an audience. This definition avoids limiting perpetrator or purpose. (Stern 2003: xx)

The two books both deal with religious terrorism, although it is not always easy to separate from political terrorism. In most cases examined in the books, it is hard to tell exactly what is religion and what is politics. Neither the Israeli-Palestinian conflict nor the American conflict over abortion is exclusively religious.

Juergensmeyer acknowledges that separating religious terrorism from political terrorism is difficult and must be done by context. However, he tries to point out where the line goes when he writes that religious terrorism holds a “transcendent moralism” and a concept of “cosmic war” that justify violent acts.

The very first sentence in Stern’s book says something interesting about terrorism sprung from religion that separates it from violence with secular motivation. She writes, “Religious terrorism arises from pain and loss and from impatience with a God who is slow to respond to our plight, who doesn’t answer.”

Like Juergensmeyer, Stern acknowledges the difficulty in separating religious violence from political violence, but she shares an interesting observation with her readers when she writes that religious terrorists are more violent and more inclined to target civilian people randomly. Victims are not picked because of who they are but because they are accessible. Most obvious about religious terrorists, however, is their will to establish religious laws and their use of religious texts to justify violence.

In the first part of his book, Juergensmeyer studies what he calls the “cultures of violence”. His running thesis throughout the book is that religious terrorists rarely act on their own. In fact, they would be nothing without their supporters and apologists who provide validation for their actions. The people who give ideological justification for acts of violence are just as important as those who execute them are.

I think Juergensmeyer is on to something very profound. Terrorists often think of themselves as heroes, but what is a hero without admirers. Diminish the fan base and the star will fall.

The World's First Cloned Drug-Sniffing Dogs

South Korea has created the world’s first cloned canine plans to put duplicated dogs on patrol to sniff out drugs. From the International Herald Tribune:

The Korean Customs Service unveiled Thursday seven cloned Labrador retrievers being trained near Incheon International Airport, west of Seoul. The dogs were born five to six months ago after being separately cloned from a skilled drug-sniffing canine in active service.

Due to the difficulties in finding dogs who are up to snuff for the critical jobs, officials said using clones could help reduce costs.

The cloning work was conducted by a team of Seoul National University scientists who in 2005 successfully created the world’s first known dog clone, an Afghan hound named Snuppy.

The irony is that they want to put a stop to the illegal drugs trade because narcotics make people do crazy things.

Keep Magic Mushrooms Legal

From Javno:

The Dutch cabinet has proposed a ban on the sale of all hallucinogenic "magic" mushrooms because they could induce life-threatening behaviour.

A bill will now pass to the Dutch parliament, where a majority of lawmakers are expected to back a ban after a teenage French girl who had eaten mushrooms died jumping from a bridge in 2007.

Many people will welcome this move by the Dutch government, but I think it’s an overreaction. The French girl had not only eaten mushrooms, she was intoxicated by cannabis and alcohol too. I’m not saying the mushrooms did not play a vital part in her death, but criminalization is not the answer. If anything, the tragic death shows the danger of criminalization. It’s no coincidence that all victims are tourists from countries with a zero-tolerance approach to drugs. The well-informed Dutch mushroom consumers can manage their intake because information is freely available in an open market. It’s about time prohibitionists realize the black market will put more people’s lives at risk.

The Society for Humanistic Judaism

humanistic_judaism.jpg

Secularism is often associated with a lack of respect for history and tradition. This is undoubtedly true in many cases, but to refrain from taking part in religion-based culture and embracing its identity is not always necessary. Secularism could in fact help people come to grips with their cultural identity. In my opinion, we don’t need God to appreciate tradition based on theism.

I just found an excellent example of this combination of secularism and respect for heritage. When browsing through some secular blogs I came across the website of the Society for Humanistic Judaism. I think they prove a superb example of reason coexisting with a culture and identity sprung from religious superstition.

The humanistic Jews define themselves as follows:

  • A Jew is someone who identifies with the history, culture and future of the Jewish people.
  • Jewish identity is best preserved in a free, pluralistic environment.
  • Jewish history is a human saga, a testament to the significance of human power and human responsibility.
  • Judaism is the historic culture of the Jewish people.
  • We possess the power and responsibility to shape our own lives independent of supernatural authority.
  • Ethics and morality should serve human needs.
  • The freedom and dignity of the Jewish people must go hand in hand with the freedom and dignity of every human being.

Striking Nurses Support War on Drug Users

Swedish nurses are on strike demanding better pay levels. The strike has been called by the Association of Health Professionals. Apart from organizing nurses who are underpaid due to Sweden’s semi-socialist welfare system, the Association of Health Professionals gives money to support the National Association for a Drug-free Society, which is a Maoist organization devoted to the war on drugs and those who use them. According to their ideology, drug users should be denied human rights as anyone who takes narcotic substances is considered a non-human. In my opinion, the very idea of dehumanizing people to legitimize inhumane treatment should rightfully be thought of as fascist.

I suggest the Association of Health Professionals drops its support of this disgusting organization and splits the money among its underpaid members.

Bahrain to Root Out Gays

Latest news from Bahrain:

School students could soon be spied on under a campaign to stamp out homosexuality, under demands made by MPs yesterday. Parliament also demanded that the Interior Ministry stop granting any residence permits to foreign homosexuals.

Any already here should be deported as soon as they are detected, MPs said at parliament's weekly session.

MPs also called for regular inspections to root out homosexuals at massage parlours, health clubs and hair salons.

It also called for monitoring in schools and for pupils who veer towards homosexuality to be punished.

Typos

I don’t know what’s wrong with me, but in the past few days, I have made so many typos I begin to think I suffered a stroke or something. I fix the typos as soon as I notice them, but the bad spelling is embarrassing. I will try to better myself.

Hard Candy

Alexis Petridis doesn’t like Madonna’s new album, but I do. I bought it last night and listen to it right now. My favourites so far are tracks number four and eleven, Heartbeat and Devil Wouldn't Recognize You.

Evaluation Made Useless by Narrow-Minded Framework

“Paying for sex has been illegal in Sweden for nearly ten years, and now the government wants to evaluate the law’s impact,” The Local reports.

But as Isabella Lund points out in her excellent blog, the framework set for the enquiry prevents it from suggesting the law to be abolished. It is obvious the political elite does not want confirmation of what the sex workers have said all along: the law is the problem, not the sex trade itself.

EU Abandons Plans to Protect Gays and Lesbians

no_pride.jpg

The European Commission gives in to religious fanatics and conservative homophobes and scraps plans for a union-wide directive aimed to protection gay people against discrimination. I’m not surprised. This is why pragmatism results in oppression—the idiots always win. From the EU Observer:

The European Commission has abandoned its plans to protect gays and lesbians against discrimination under pressure from Germany.

An anti-discrimination bill against all forms of discrimination on the grounds laid out in Article 13 of the Amsterdam Treaty had been announced as part of the commission’s work programme for 2008.

However, the European executive is now retreating to the safe grounds of focussing solely on disability protection.

The commission is afraid that more conservative member states will endanger the unanimity needed by member states.

I’m no friend of anti-discrimination laws per se, but it annoys me that these laws are not considered relevant when they apply to homosexuals. Every member state have signed the Amsterdam Treaty, so it should be respected by all.

Congratulations to the bigots, you won.

Palestinian Gays Are Collaborators

From desperate emails, I just learned that the Palestinian Human Rights Monitoring Group has approved Islamist harassment of gay people. As a result, this so-called human-rights organization has given moral legitimacy to the Palestinian Authority praxis of labelling homosexuals—who are caught attempting to flee from religious oppression—collaborators and treat them as security prisoners.

I want to stress that my sources so far haven’t supplied me with any document or newspaper article that confirms their claim.

Lesbian Pornography Funded by Swedish Taxpayers

I just read this in The Local:

A short film collection shot on mobile phones by female directors seeking to create queer and feminist pornography is set to receive 350,000 kronor ($59,000) in Swedish cultural subsidies.

This is so stupid; I cannot find words to describe it. Why on earth should the taxpayers fund this project? Well, I can see that it makes some sense considering most films produced in Sweden are funded through state subsidies, but to my knowledge, no other pornographic movies are.

Besides, it annoys me that so many cultural workers lack the commercial self-confidence and ask the government for money whenever they want to make something “out of the mainstream”. There’s no doubt in my mind that high-quality lesbian pornography could bring in some serious money if only the producers got over their hostility towards capitalism.

Ang Lee Goes 'Gay' Again

Director Ang Lee, best known for Brokeback Mountain, is returning to the gay genre with a movie revolving around the Woodstock music festival, Reuters reports.

To me and many other gay men, Brokeback Mountain is the movie of the decade. I can honestly say it is the only love-themed film I have ever fully related to. So when Mr Lee announces a new film, it’s big news to me.

Peter Singer on Homosexuality

Why do so many people who claim the homosexual act is immoral because it cannot lead to reproduction have no problem with contraception and sterilization?

I good question put by Australian philosopher Peter Singer in an article on homosexuality I just read.

A Tribute to Male Beauty

Dieux du Stade (“Gods of the Stadium” in English) is the name of a popular annual calendar of semi-nude French rugby players. It’s very erotic without being outright pornographic—it’s a tribute to male beauty.

To my surprise, I found several video clips from the making of the calendar on YouTube. I’m surprised because YouTube seems to have a strict policy towards nudity.

Juan Martin Berberian is the name of the player being photographed in the clip I post here. I think he looks very much like some classic sculpture of a Greek god or warrior.

The Propaganda War Is On

tibet_propaganda.jpg

The past few weeks have seen some violent rallies against China’s Tibet policy in the Western cities visited by the Olympic Torch. But the pro-China camp didn’t give the protesters the silent treatment. The picture seen here was taken in San Francisco on 10 April. It’s obvious a major propaganda war is on. Personally, I have no opinion on Tibet. All I know is that the Dalai Lama is a silly product of theocratic thinking.

The New Star of Anti-Gay America

Stacy Harp is the new star of anti-gay America. In numerous blogs, she spreads her fantasies about what homosexuality really is. To her, homosexuality is all about a man “putting his penis in somebody’s asshole”. Why gay men want the right to married if it’s all about anal intercourse is beyond me, but I suppose logic plays no role in this.

Just now, I listened to a recorded telephone conversation between Ms Harp and gay-rights activist Joe Brummer, and it is truly amazing. I have had similar conversations with homophobes, but I do not think I have ever heard something quite so tacky recorded before.

Like all religious homophobes, Stacy Harp turns the table and plays the victim. On her website, she writes about her slanderous talk with Mr Brummer:

The homosexual activists online, such as Joe Brummer, are exactly the type of homosexual I have encountered that have been anything but compassionate, kind etc. They indeed are the true hate filled liars and slanderers, unrighteous, unholy, sexually immoral and deviant. It’s no wonder they act the way the do…. and yet today, Joe saw the light and was able to at least slightly admit that he is one of those homosexuals that give the other homosexuals in the world who are compassionate, a bad name.

And I do keep in mind that most homosexuals aren’t haters, liars, antiChrist bigots like Joe and Kevin are. But they certainly are bad representatives of the homosexual community and certainly won’t win me or any other Christian I know to their beliefs or side. Now maybe if they were more loving and tolerant and less hateful and less bigoted, then bible obeying and bible believing Christians like me, could have an open dialog. Until they see the error of their ways and how they truly treat people like me, who they truly despise and truly hate, then no progress would be made.

Maybe they should keep that in mind before they pick up their next verbal stone and sling it in my direction.

After listening to the recorded conversation she is referring to, this is truly hilarious reading. The woman is not only mad; she is projecting her madness onto those she hates.

A transcript of the recorded telephone conversation is available here. The actual recording can be listened to here. More about Stacy Harp here and here.

Serbian Fascism and Christian Homophobia

The Serbian capital Belgrade will host the Eurovision Song Contest on 24 May. The event is expected to attract many gay men from all over Europe. Damir Grbic, leader of the far-right Christian organization Obraz, has warned that any sign of homosexuality in public will be met with violence. As always, the Christian villains motivate their threat of violence with a will to protect the children from the "morally and sexually degenerate" gays and lesbians.

Card-Carrying Secularists

I just learned that the Swedish Humanist Association’s membership has grown rapidly the past year. At present, the organization has more than 5,000 card-carrying members. That’s nothing compared to the largest churches and mosques, but organizing atheists and agnostics has always been more difficult.

I’m one of the new members. I decided to get involved only a couple of months ago.

As regular readers will know, I have spent the past two semesters studying religion at the Centre for Theology and Religious Studies at Lund University. Before I began my religious studies, I thought it would make me more humble to values based on religion, but the result is the opposite. The more I learn about religion, the more I disapprove of it. Don’t get me wrong, I fully understand and respect people of faith who wish to seek spirituality or identify with religious practices. What I dislike is the complete disregard of reason favoured by most Christian and Muslim apologists and theologians. Studying religion has taught me that organized religion and its implications on society must be fought back vigorously.

Respect My Authoritah!

pope-cartman.jpg

From New York Times:

Before a crowd of nearly 60,000 people at Yankee Stadium, Pope Benedict XVI on Sunday ended his first visit to the United States as leader of the Roman Catholic Church with a reminder to the faithful that “obedience” to the authority of the church, even in a country that prizes individual freedom, is the foundation of their religious faith.

What the Pope says is, “You are free to do what you want as long as you do what I tell you.”

This is what makes me very hostile to organized religion. It is impossible to combine individual liberty with authoritarian religion.

Helpline for Potential Sex Offenders

About two weeks ago, Sweden was traumatized by the brutal killing of a 10-year-old girl named Engla. The killer was caught a few days later, and during investigation, it became known he was something of a serial rapist and murderer. The man, 42-year-old Anders Eklund, has confessed to killing another woman, and the police suspect he might be responsible for the death of several other women.

After the first chock, some are now debating the repeated pattern of violent rapists, paedophiles, and sadists. As expected, the first reaction of the mob is to call for tougher sentences and even capital punishment reintroduced. But it is highly unlikely more prison time would deter any one of these men from raping and killing women and children. In fact, I think it might have the opposite effect, as there would no longer be any real difference between raping and killing. Life in prison would be the outcome regardless.

Yesterday I learned that the Swedish Association for Sexuality Education (RFSU) has suggested a national helpline for potential sex offenders. I think this is an excellent idea. From The Local:

The helpline will be there for presumptive sex offenders that feel obsessive thoughts and want to prevent their thoughts from turning into compulsive actions. This way children and women could be better protected from potential offenders.

“There are those that are borderline, who have obsessive compulsive disorders. They feel the impulses but can’t manage them. They should then have the possibility to call from wherever they are in the country to seek help to overcome these thoughts,” said Åsa Regnér, Secretary General of RFSU.

Speaking at RFSU’s conference in Gothenburg, Regnér continued to say that, “it could prevent these type of offences which would otherwise have such terrible consequences.”

[...]

“The point is that it should be national and staffed 24/7 by people who are trained to handle these kinds of issues. They could give emergency assistance and also refer callers for further help, depending on where in the country they live,” said Regnér.

This is a much better preventive approach to the problem than any prison sentence would be.

Hillary Clinton Blames Losses on Netroots

From Huffington Post:

At a small closed-door fundraiser after Super Tuesday, Sen. Hillary Clinton blamed what she called the "activist base" of the Democratic Party—and MoveOn.org in particular—for many of her electoral defeats, saying activists had "flooded" state caucuses and "intimidated" her supporters, according to an audio recording of the event obtained by The Huffington Post.

Late last night, the New York City police arrested CNN’s Richard Quest in Central Park with some methamphetamine in his pocket and a rope around his scrotum. Today, the nutty moralists are going wild in the blogosphere. Personally, I like Mr Quest more now he has proven good taste in scenery. Central Park is a beautiful place, and if I was to engage in some outdoor sex and could pick any place, I think I would go for Central Park.

Picture of the Day

swedish_countryside.jpg

I have spent the day at my parents’ summer residence, which is situated in a very traditional and old-fashioned part of the Swedish countryside. Not only the red-and-white houses are stereotypical, so are the locals. A well-known novelist once compared this part of Sweden to Texas, and although the landscape separates the two, much of the attitudes are very similar. For one thing, the largest organization in the area is a gun-owners association. I don’t visit very often, so when I do, I get to know everything about the latest firearms available on the market. My uncle, who is a proud owner of a new rifle, taught me everything I need to know about it.

I snapped the picture from my parents’ veranda. The house seen in the picture belongs to one of the neighbours. Not that it matters much, all the houses look the same in this rural district.

Transsexual Gets New Chinese Identity Card

China is heavily bashed over its human-rights record in Western media these days. And suddenly an independent Tibet seems to be at the top on many politicians’ agenda. Good news from China is drowning in all negative reporting. But here is some good, groundbreaking news from China.

Ying Ning, the 33-year-old transsexual man who underwent about twenty operations starting in November 2006, got a new Chinese identity card as a female on Tuesday. The China Daily reports:

“I am so excited to receive it after a month-long wait,” said Ying, who is believed to be the first transsexual person in China to go public with the media under a new gender.

“The ID card has a special meaning for me, that I have been accepted by society. It will be the beginning of my new life,” Ying told a reporter with the Tianjin-based newspaper Daily News.

“I was embarrassed by some people’s curious looks. I had to give up my trip to Zhejiang for a winter vacation because I was worried that the male gender on my old ID card would confuse the airport’s security staff,” said Ying. “I was really sensitive over this at that time.”

At that point, Ying applied to the local police station for a new ID card. Regulations require such applicants to provide medical proof of a gender change and parental consent, even for those of legal age.

Born in 1975, Ying, a native Tianjin resident, married a woman in 1998, but the marriage ended months later. “I felt sorry for my ex-wife, but I knew I could not bring her happiness. I always wanted to be a woman,” said Ying.

Migration Completed

The migration to the Movable Type platform is now completed. Everything looks all right on my screen, but if any one of you should notice something that looks odd, please send me an email.

It might be tricky to comment. I still haven’t figured out exactly how to monitor reader comments. The program seems to lack an option in between no moderation and reader registration. I will do some reading and try to find some way to allow monitored comments without readers needing to sign in.

Update: I think I managed to solve the problem. Everyone should now be able to comment without having to register.

Migration

This website and its contents will migrate to the new platform sometime before the weekend, so the blogging will continue to be slow until then. The new design will look much like the current one, with only some minor changes. I have run with theses fonts and colours since 2005 I decided I wanted to keep them. In other words, there will be no dramatic changes on the front, but a revolution behind the scenes.

I will return to near daily blogging next week at the latest.

Al-Qaeda's Love of Drugs, Prostitutes, and Gay Lovers

Yon_book

An interesting thing mentioned in Michael Yon's new book Moment of Truth in Iraq is the indiscreet sexual life of the world's most famous terrorists. Their frequent visits to brothels have provided the Americans with some of the best intelligence. Another source of information used to be the gay lover of a high-ranking al-Qaeda terrorist. Whenever the man was abused, he supplied American forces information to kill his terroris
