From Javno:
The Dutch cabinet has proposed a ban on the sale of all hallucinogenic "magic" mushrooms because they could induce life-threatening behaviour.A bill will now pass to the Dutch parliament, where a majority of lawmakers are expected to back a ban after a teenage French girl who had eaten mushrooms died jumping from a bridge in 2007.
Many people will welcome this move by the Dutch government, but I think it’s an overreaction. The French girl had not only eaten mushrooms, she was intoxicated by cannabis and alcohol too. I’m not saying the mushrooms did not play a vital part in her death, but criminalization is not the answer. If anything, the tragic death shows the danger of criminalization. It’s no coincidence that all victims are tourists from countries with a zero-tolerance approach to drugs. The well-informed Dutch mushroom consumers can manage their intake because information is freely available in an open market. It’s about time prohibitionists realize the black market will put more people’s lives at risk.
