Die Mauer

die_mauer.jpg

On the day, twenty years ago, the people of East Germany had enough of communist oppression and tore down the Berlin Wall. It would be the first in a series of events that led to the collapse of Soviet-style communism in Europe. Tonight, world leaders will gather in Berlin to celebrate the anniversary.

In 1989, I was caught up in my own teenage rebellion and an outspoken fan of anarchism. In my record collection, I had “Die Mauer” by Swedish punk group Ebba Grön. When I listen to it now, it brings back memories.

Those of us who remember the 1980s must never forget how bad it was during the Cold War.
